Mass Effect 2 was an unusually cinematic action RPG, and it's clear that a lot of effort went into offering the player even more dramatic and slickly presented story missions in the third entry of the series. This is partly to the detriment of the side quests (always a problematic aspect of the ME series), which in some ways take a step back compared with the previous game, but I guess when Bioware's main missions are as good as they are here it's going to make the rest of the game feel like filler no matter what you do with it.
