In order to maximize experience level progression in Mass Effect 1 you are not allowed to kill enemies while inside the Mako (since doing so reduces the XP points reward by half). Therefore, any hardcore ME player will rush gladly into the fray completely unprotected (on high difficulty settings, no less) for some close combat - with a sniper rifle! I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favorite way to die...
