I consider myself a fairly civilized person, but I must admit that when it comes to the Elder Scrolls series I've engaged in a good deal of Internet hate over the years and said some rather nasty things about Bethesda, Todd Howard and people who honestly believe Morrowind and/or Oblivion to be truly great RPGs.

In spite of my general antipathy towards what I consider to be a couple of blandly designed roleplaying games which never achieved the level of open world greatness of, say, the Gothic or STALKER series, it's still an undisputable fact that I'm always excited for the release of a new Bethesda game. I looked forward to Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3 - though ironically not Obsidian's noticeably superior New Vegas - with the exact same embarrassing fan boy-ish sense of excitement and wonder (and at least with TES4 way back in 2006, I was genuinely impressed at first by the graphics and seemingly detailed environments). Before long, however, all three games started to bore me immensely with their clumsy combat mechanics, tedious skill systems and empty, repetitive game worlds filled with utterly pointless dungeons and unforgettably forgettable side quests.

Every time Bethesda has a new game out I keep hoping that *this* time I *am* going to like it: this time it *is* going to be great, and just this once the Howard and his minions will have finally learnt their lessons. So far that has never turned out to be the case, but - surprise, surprise - I really hope Skyrim will be The Game That Does It. It shouldn't be possible to be this stupid or naive, but, well, here we go again...
