I have been nagged and nagged about playing Mass Effect for YEARS. I'm talking years. A former housemate of mine actually got pissed off that I never bothered. I don't know why, maybe I felt I had better shit to play. Welp... it finally happened. I think my recent run of Dragon Age: Inquisition has been a factor in me finally picking it up due to wanting to see some more BioWare stuff - so why not start with arguably their most memorable and standout title?

Honestly, initial impressions were that this would be a dated chore. No quality of life HUD, character models that look like they're constantly wide eyed on a coke binge, and bland planets with very similar landmarks but in different colours. Combat is very Dead Space, and there isn't a lot to it. Sure you can assign weapons, abilities and equipment - but it's very by the numbers and fortunately legendary edition rids you of a lot of slow up and pop in graphics which some found too much - but combat is in parts not exciting and a chore.

My reservations did not last long however, due to the incredibly strong narrative and familiar mechanics like decision making, romancing, character loyalty missions - Bioware trademarks that make this sort of game stand out (you can be the biggest asshole or a stand up guy, having an indelible effect on how things pan out). The ensemble cast, including Keith David, Seth Green, Marina Sirtis and the mighty Lance Henriksen, deliver some well written dialogue - and the narrative drags you in. This game's story, attention to detail, freedom, world building, variety of characters is enough to drag you in - and the third act is fantastic. I look forward to the next.
