The Silva Nigra Suite owes its name to the organ of St. Blasien Cathedral. Located in the midst of the Black Forest, this scenery inspired me for this music. According to the commission for the context of a 'popular choral concert,' it combines elements of jazz with classical organ music and serves as a bridge between modern choral sounds and the venerable building of the bishop's cathedral. It is dedicated to Prof. Ruben Sturm, who brought it to premiere in the present, revised version.
Opening:
The opening is dedicated to the theme of the connection between old and new. Both classical techniques of organ music and new sound worlds are introduced and merged here.
Night without Moon:
A romantic idea of the peace of a deep dark night in the Black Forest underlies this short movement. Far from threatening, it feels grippingly simple and sweet.
Dance on the Kandel:
It is said that on the legendary Kandel mountain, the witches of the region celebrate Walpurgis Night. This movement arises from the idea of a wild dance taking place on the plateau. It should be played tempestuously, impulsively, and dramatically.
„Die Silva Nigra Suite verdankt ihren Namen der Orgel des Domes St. Blasien. Mitten im Schwarzwald gelegen, hat mich diese Szenerie für diese Musik inspiriert. Gemäß dem Kompositionsauftrag für den Rahmen eines ‚populären Chorkonzertes‘ verbindet sie Jazzelemente mit klassischer Orgelmusik und dient als Brücke zwischen modernen Chorklängen und dem altehrwürdigen Gebäude der Bischofskathedrale. Gewidmet ist sie Prof. Ruben Sturm, der sie in der vorliegenden, überarbeiteten Fassung zur Uraufführung gebracht hat.“ (Mathias Rehfeldt)
Eröffnung:
Die Eröffnung widmet sich dem Thema der Verbindung von alt und neu. Sowohl klassische Techniken der Orgelmusik als auch neue Klangwelten werden hier vorgestellt und zusammengeführt.
Nacht ohne Mond:
Eine romantische Vorstellung des Friedens einer tiefdunklen Nacht im Schwarzwald liegt diesem kurzen Satz zugrunde. Alles andere als bedrohlich, sondern ergreifend-schlicht und lieblich fühlt sich diese Stimmung an.
Tanz auf dem Kandel:
Man sagt, dass auf dem sagenumwobenen Berg Kandel die Hexen der Region Walpurgisnacht feiern. Dieser Satz erwächst aus der Vorstellung eines wilden Tanzes, der auf dem Plateau stattfindet. Ungestüm, impulsiv und dramatisch soll er gespielt werden.
