"I lied to myself that it was over. I was still alive, my loved ones were still dead. You can’t run from your past. You’ll end up running in circles. Until you fall back down to the same hole you were trying to escape from, only the hole’s grown deeper. Your only chance is to turn around and face it."

The revenge Max Payne had taken for the murder of his family in the first part didn't banish the demons from his head. It merely provided a temporary relief. He soon realized the only way to come to peace was by looking at the past and accepting it. "But it’s like looking down into the grave of your love." By becoming obsessed with Mona, the Cleaners and the Inner Circle, he at least avoids the grief. The complicated relationship with Mona turns Max Payne 2 into a violent, noir love story, and it's her who eventually, although not in a way you would anticipate, forces him to reflect on what had happened and finally begin to heal.

The narrative is captivating, the plot twists even more surprising and the monologues darker than ever. Max Payne 2 is my all-time favorite video game and this tribute will hopefully immortalize it (I know it will stay immortal among us, fans, but hey, WE will not). ;)

Again, the video is a heavily abridged version of the graphic novel. There were a couple of extra challenges with this video compared to the previous one. First, in about a quater of the voice-overs, the music was embedded. Now, there is nothing wrong with the music at all, only it prevented me from keeping the "soundtrack" piano-only. Attempting to filter it out at least partially caused a significant reduction in quality of the voice-over, so I decided instead to keep it there and work in my piano performances in a suitable way.

Second, there was a gap in the graphic novel towards the end of the story, which was displayed in cinematics instead. Trust me, it would be unacceptable to simply skip that part of the story. I could have captured the cinematics and mix it in with the graphic novel, however, I figured it would have disrupted the flow and the atmosphere (as the in-game footage looks very different from the graphic novels, obviously). Instead, I took the effort to create a sequence of images along with the thought bubbles that would fit the graphic novel. I used a couple of in-game screenshots and applied a few adjustments and filters in attempt to recreate the original effect. I hope you won't hate me for that! :)

"Throw the rules out the window, odds are you'll go that way too."

Now, go and watch how the stirring story of Max Payne continues!
