The Tempest is based loosely on Morgan Kell's Archer seen during a fateful duel prior to the clan arrival. During this battle Kell's opponent should have landed the killing blow on the Kell hound pilot, yet his machine mysteriously vanished from scanners and thus he missed his shot and Kell lived another day. This has been debated ever since and has been widely believed to have been a little hint from FASA about lostech being available to the right people. It's pretty much a given that his 'mech had some sort of ECM or stealth armour but it has never been officially determined what he used.

So PGI using this info created the Tempest, a hero Archer that is pretty much the default loadout of the Archer 2R but with ECM capability. Pretty handy for a LRM 'mech to have. The difference with this variant other than the ECM is the 'mechs ability to boat a fair amount of energy weapons, making it a brawler if one should desire that role instead. In my opinion it's worth the cash though I would always say to get it when it's on sale.
