A few people have described this method of getting the Eclipse Cannon to succeed. I don't know if it's foolproof, but it did work for me, and here's the evidence. The steps are as follows:
- Start a new game on Rookie Hunter mode (I used a cheat code to play as Ultimate Armor early. It's not necessary, but it makes the trip quicker.)
- After beating the intro stage, go to stage select immediately.
- Fire the cannon, and t should destroy the space colony.
