In the first Mega Man X game there are eight Mavericks and then Vile before fighting the "Sigma-Stage" bosses and then Sigma himself. in X2 you have the eight Mavericks and then the three X-Hunters, Agile, Violen, and Serges before fighting the "Sigma-Stage" bosses and then Sigma himself. In X3 you have the eight Mavericks and then you have Doctor Doppler's two henchmen: Bit and Byte. Bit and Byte can show up wherever they want on any of the eight Maverick stages until all eight have been defeated or until both Bit and Byte have been defeated.
Between this binary pair, Byte is the slower and much harder-hitting of the two. The key to defeating Byte is to be aware of and react appropriately to his wall repulsor mine. When this mine is on the wall it will push X away from the wall whenever you jump off of it. The key to dealing with this issue is, of course, the air dash. Jump and then dash back to the wall before doing a second jump back over Byte as he dashes into the wall. If you don't want to fight Bit/Byte as their weird conglomeration in Doppler Stage 1 and instead fight the elephant conveyor boss then it is necessary to use Byte's weakness on him to defeat him: the Tornado Fang from Tunnel Rhino.
As it is likely that X will have more hp and multiple Sub-Tanks by the time of fighting Byte he should be a much easier fight than Bit was. Unlike in X2 Bit will always be fought first and Byte will always be fought second. Defeat both with their weakness or you will fight them again in Doppler Stage 1.
