Your boss order won't matter either, apart from doing Spiral Pegasus (or "the Skiver") beforehand — that's because you don't actually need any upgrades, items or other collectibles to accomplish this. You can follow this guide with just the Fourth Armor.
And no, it isn't just exclusive to the Playstation — this trick should work on all the re-releases, too.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Turn on Rapid Fire in the Button Configuration menu
2) Line up X like he is at 00:16
3) Jump then use the Wing Spiral once, before then going into the Pause menu and switching to the X Buster again (the Jumper part lets you skip this step).
4) Go into the Pause Menu, then *hold* the Special Weapon button as you select Wing Spiral. Done right, X should be churning out a constant stream of Wing Spirals that wouldn't normally be possible without the spike ending the animation early.
5) Keep holding until the camera shifts upward three times, then go into the Pause menu again.
6) Choose the X-Buster, Pause, Hold Wing Spiral, Pause, X-Buster again, then Pause.
7) Hold Right + Wing Spiral to clear the spikes. Then proceed from there!
