A clockwork orange is an organism with a beautiful appearance, yet it is in fact a clockwork toy to be wound up by God, the Devil, or in the absense of both, the government.
An apple, ideally, has an individual identity from an orange. It has a different color, different juice, different flavor, different seeds. But ultimately, it doesn't matter, because both the orange and the apple are merely cogs in a machine to be used by a higher power, so their identity becomes trivial. They do not have the life that a real apple and orange do, to grow old, evolve, spread their seeds, and foster new life. And as soon as they ceases to function, it becomes trash.
