Mercedes Benz Verification and Validation Methods Project 2023
The Mercedes-Benz Verification and Validation Methods Project 2023, part of a broader German automotive industry initiative, focuses on developing structures for verifying safety standards in automated vehicles, particularly in urban environments. This project, initiated by the VDA's autonomous and connected driving initiative and supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, involved collaboration with 21 partners.
The project addressed the complexities of automated driving in urban settings, considering the challenges posed by pedestrians, cyclists, traffic signals, and other vehicles. The essence of the VVM project was to ensure that automated driving functions are safe, reliable, and beneficial in terms of precision and quality. A major goal was to develop a model comprising various procedures, methods, and tools for safety verification, which could potentially lead to industry-wide standards improving road safety for all users.
The VVM project is notable for its methodological approach, which is the first of its kind to include industrial processes. It builds upon Germany's leading role in automated driving, as demonstrated by the introduction of regulations for fully automated driving (SAE Level 4) in 2021 and 2022. The project's outcomes are expected to facilitate industry-wide collaboration and contribute significantly to the global standards of automated driving safety.
