This game (Mercs or MERCS) is pretty awesome, though the Arcade Mode may make you cry uncle (though you can retry as you like when you die) after the third level due to the lack of multiplayer! Anyhoo, since the game doesn't seem to support multiple players (like the Arcade game), this video focuses on the Original Mode, which is cool and was made with single player in mind.

The levels are different from Arcade Mode and you get different characters with different specialties (whereas in Arcade Mode, you just got different power-ups) such as their weapon of choice and different limits in power and speed. Another addition to Original Mode are places to shop. You can buy items to power-up your Mercs, restore health, resurrect a character, or buy tips, which was clearly influenced by Capcom's own Forgotten Worlds.

Any problems? Yes. The challenge in this game could have been greatly alleviated if there was some way to fix your position or strafe. As-is, you have a hard time adjusting your aim and shooting dangerous enemies like tanks because you often have to retreat the moment an opening arrives. This wouldn't be such a problem if the enemies ever stopped coming in massive hordes. I don't think that would have been much to ask for.

While the option to choose characters at will in Original Mode adds strategy, the flamethrower weapon is one of the most effective weapons in this game due to its rotational fire and overall power. However, this game adds a lot of ways in which to challenge yourself through the different characters, weapons and handicaps and is a fun game overall. You can grab some chicken while blasting bad guys! Enjoy.
