Blaster Master 2 Game Sample - Genesis/MD
Original Air Date: May 30th, 2009
A pretty horrid game compared to the original Blaster Master / MetaFight, and not even a very good game in its own right. Think of the original game except with sloppy play control, awful and often annoying music (that resets if you go in a menu), generic level designs, decent visuals (that are certainly better than the original, but that's not saying much as the original was on NES), unbalanced difficulty, and most of the technically pleasing elements of the original removed (the ability to do overhead levels with Jason or explore the more open-ended levels). This game tried to incorporate some new mechanics like giving Jason more abilities and allowing your tank (SOPHIA) to navigate top-down mazes, but due to the level design and sloppy control, they're more of a pain in the ass than they are enjoyable.
A lot of people don't know about this "sequel"... not that it's anything to concern yourself with if you didn't know about it. It's obscure for a reason... hell, the game doesn't even have credits and you have to bust your balls to reach the end of this one. Sure, Software Creations may be generally responsible for this game, but who is REALLY responsible? Well, I probably wouldn't want my name out there if I made a subpar sequel to one of the most memorable games from the 80s either. Also, the back of the box (which I have) is EXTREMELY shady... has anyone ever noticed that the back of the box has no legitimate screenshots? Come to think of it, this was published by Sunsoft... Sunsoft also published the awful port of Batman: Revenge of the Joker... both Blaster Master 2 and the Gen port of Batman: Revenge of the Joker are obscure despite being based on popular franchises and don't show screenshots. Coincidence? I think not.
Even on its own, this game is a mediocre platform/action game for the Genesis/MD, which is made so much worse because the Gen/MD has quite a few quality titles within said genre. I see no reason for casual players to pick this up; I'd only recommend it to die-hard BM fans, major collectors, or completists.
