Our tour took us along the scenic drive to Mesa Top Loop road. Here we stopped at a few overlooks and checked out village remains. This was the only way to see Cliff Palace during the time of our visit.
You will see some of the Wetherill Mesa area since I went on a couple hikes there, checked out the self guided tour of the Step House, and went on a couple of cliff dwelling tours from that location. If you like hiking, the Point Lookout Trail is the best one for views. You hike to the top of the iconic rock formation that is seen for miles around. You can access this hike from the Morefield Campground area.
We recommend at least two days here to experience the entire park.
There is a fee to enter but it covers seven days. You can use your America the Beautiful or Access pass here.
Bonus - We share a little clip of our train ride to Cascade Canyon out of Durango. This is not part of Mesa Verde but it is a great outing if you are in the area.
