Dead or Alive burst onto the arcade scene with all the swagger of a new kid on the block, rocking Sega's Model 2 board - the same tech that powered Virtua Fighter 2. It was like a flashy, younger cousin to the Virtua Fighter series, with a style that almost screamed 'spin-off'. What really turned heads was the graphics. Sure, it couldn't quite match the super-detailed environments of Virtua Fighter 3, which was strutting its stuff on the fancier Model 3 hardware. But Dead or Alive had its own tricks, flaunting cool effects with stuff like roofs and bridges hovering right over the action.

The character designs? Oh boy, they were next-level, even giving Sega’s top-tier fighters a run for their money. And let's not forget the game's, um, 'bouncy' approach to physics. Dead or Alive wasn't just about making hair and clothes flutter in the wind - it took things a few steps further, especially with the female characters. Sure, subtle jiggles weren't new in 3D games - eagle-eyed gamers had already spotted them in Soul Blade’s Taki. But Dead or Alive? It put everything front and center, stirring up a storm of both cheers and jeers.
