Metal Gear was a very popular arcade game series in the mid 1990s with the release of Metal Slug in 1996. It was a 2d shooter, but you have a 3 dimensional background. The game has elements of Japanese animation in cartoon like world. You appear to be in a 3rd world dictatorship of some sort, and your mission is to kill everyone in sight and rescue prisoners.

The game itself was fun, and it wasn't unreasonably difficult. It was a fast action game. The Neo Geo was marketed as a 24 bit system, but it was not a 24 bit system in reality. It had a 16 bit Motorola 68000 processor and a Zilog Z80 8 bit coprocessor. Adding the two together does make it 24 bits, but it had 16 bit processing power. The graphics chipset had a 24 bit bus, and it was had a 24 bit GPU.

The great thing about the Neo Geo was, you could use one board to play many different games. This was not the case for most arcade cabinets at the time, because you had to change out the whole board to put in a new game. You could simply put in a new rom cartridge to change the game very much like the home console version of the Neo Geo.

Metal Slug was first released in 1996 to 2009. The first five were available for the Neo Geo, Metal Slug 6 was released in 2006 by Sammy Atomiswave for the arcades. It was ported to the Playstation 2. Metal Slug 7 was released in 2008 for the Nintendo DS, and Playstation Portable by SNK Playmore. The graphics has not changed much from the Neo Geo versions released in the 1990s. You can say this game was a classic, because it is timeless.
