Mexican military and cops seize two truckswith 349 migrants
0Mexican security forces discovered two trucks with 349 migrants from Central America on Monday.The first incident took place Monday before dawn when state cops patrolling a stretch of the Raudales-Ocozocoautla highway in the Veracruz city of Las Choapas came across an abandoned trailer after it had encountered a mechanical problem and its driver disappeared, leaving 233 men and women trapped inside.At least 191 of the migrants were natives of Guatemala while 19 were from Honduras, 11 were from El Salvador and an additional 11 were Nicaraguan nationals. There was also one person from Belize.All of the migrants were provided medical attention and placed in custody of the National Institute of Migration for processing. Share this article Share Later in the day, members of the National Guard stationed in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, were investigating a driver for operating a truck without license plates and upon his consent for an inspection, found 116 Central American migrants crammed inside. The majority of the migrants were from Guatemala. The servicemen arrested the driver and turned him over to the custody of the state attorney general's office. None of the migrants found in both trucks presented medical problems.Authorities did not say how long the migrants had been in the country, but Mexican online portal La Silla Rota reported that the Central Americans had crossed into the country via a method known as the 'ant way' in which migrants enter Mexico in small groups to avoid being detected. It was the third massive discovery of migrants inside a truck since Saturday when the Mexican military stopped a driver at a checkpoint in the northeastern state of Nuevo León and heard loud noises coming from the trailer box before finding 103 Central American migrants and another five from Honduras sitting in the cabin.Despite warnings from the United States government and their Mexican counterparts, migrants from Central American countries continue to put their lives at risk in hopes of securing entry across the United States' southern border with Mexico. President Joe Biden is expected this week to unveil a bill that will provide a pathway to citizenship for about 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the country.The 'U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021' will reflect Biden's priorities on the issue, including expanding the refugee resettlement program and deploying more technology to the Southern border. It provides an immediate pathway to citizenship for farmworkers, DACA recipients, and Temporary Protected Status holders. There is also an eight-year path to citizenship for others, which includes a five-year path to a green card and a three-year path to citizenship after background checks and other steps.
