This will demonstrate how to make a field that auto generates a combination of numbers and letters to make a unique ID for a row in a table. In this example the value will be based on the date, time and initials of the user entering the new record. By doing so, a case number would not be an arbitrary value but instead contain useful identifying information such as when it was recorded and by who.

There are several real world applications for this such as a case management databases where each case needs a unique identifier. A receiving database would also benefit from such a function, each transaction getting a unique ID.
