Midnight Run: Road Fighter 2 serves as the sequel to the classic Road Fighter title. Developed and published by Konami, it made its debut in arcades in March 1996 before finding its way to the PlayStation in 1997. While the arcade version enjoyed a global release, the PlayStation edition was exclusive to Japan and Europe. In Europe, the PlayStation iteration bore the simplified name 'Midnight Run,' shedding the 'Road Fighter' connection.

In terms of gameplay, one of its standout features is the ability for players to seamlessly toggle between manual and automatic transmission modes during races. Although it diverged from the 2D roots of Road Fighter, the game's scenery is reminiscent of other Japanese racing titles like Initial D Arcade Stage and Wangan Midnight, albeit without officially licensed cars. Players are also treated to a unique selection of both ordinary and tuned cars among the available four vehicle options. The game offers three distinct tracks – Sunset Trial, Starlight Heat, and Midnight Run – each corresponding to a varying level of difficulty.

There are only three tracks and four cars in the game. The real issue, though, lies within the game itself. The control system lacks support for analog controls, and the digital controls don't effectively compensate for this. Another issue is the inexplicable bursts of speed from trailing opponents, robbing players of victory at the last moment.
