The main test command, where -256,-512 are the cords of a full column of air:
execute @p[r=25] ~ ~ ~ testforblocks ~ ~2 ~ ~ 255 ~ -256 ~2 -512 all

Simply put, i used the testforblocks command to test if a player is indoors or outdoors (if they have a block above their head or not). Combined with a daylight detector, i was able to make myself (a zombie) stronger outside and at night.
