Minecraft Rome Project - Update #4 - Forum of Augustus
Hello everyone! And here's another update on my Minecraft Rome Map.
In this series I will make small videos about the updates of my Minecraft Rome project. In this project I'm recreating ancient Rome in the year 200 AD. Currently I'm busy with what I call the 'Beautification Updates'. These updates are about changing various buildings to look better as well as placing them in the right position (I started building this project with a little lack of knowledge of the buildings which has forced me to fix all of this now :P). I hope you'll like the videos.
Forum of Augustus:
This was the second expansion of the Imperial Fora. The construction was ordered by emperor Augustus himself in order to celebrate the victory over the assassins of his uncle, Julius Caesar. Allegedly Augustus prayed to Mars, the god of war, to grand him victory over the assassins of Julius Caesar in order to avenge his death. If Mars would help him gain victory, Augustus would build a temple in his honour. As you can imagine, the battle was won and Augustus kept his promise and built his forum around the Temple of Martis Ultoris (Mars the avenger).
The forum was famous for its many statues which were placed in front of the pillars of the covered hallways on both sides of the plaza. At the center of the plaza a statue of Augustus riding a four horse chariot was located. When facing the temple, the statues on the left resembled famous Roman generals and politicians. Statues of famous Romans like Titus Flaminius, Scipio Africanus and Gaius Marius decorated the forum on this side. The statues on the right represented the bloodline of the gens Julia. The Julia family claimed to be long decendents of the godess Venus, and Augustus traced his family tree all the way back to the godess herself. In the two half round exedrae were two large statues. These were statues of Romulus (founder of Rome) and Aeneas (famous Roman mythical hero).
The most important building on the forum was the Temple of Mars Ultor (Mars the avenger). Next to the temple were two triumphal arches which were dedicated to the generals Germanicus and Drusus Maior. Behind the forum was a huge wall to seperate the forum from the Subura district. It was both a symbolic division between poor and rich (since the Subura district was the poor neighborhood of Rome) and a practical divider, because it prevented the spread of fires towards the forum.
