Ingredients:
Cake:
2 1/2 cups flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 eggs, room temperature
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/4 cups milk

Strawberry Puree:
6 ounces fresh strawberries
1 tablespoon sugar

Buttercream Frosting:
1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Cake Decoration:
12 ounce fondant, rolled out 1/8 inch thick
10 strawberries of varying sizes

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and grease and flour two 8-by-8-inch square pans.
2. To make the cake: Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Set aside.
3. Beat the butter and sugar together in a mixer until light and fluffy.
4. Add eggs to the butter mixture, mixing fully between each egg. Mix in the vanilla.
5. Mix half of the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Add half of the milk and mix. Continue with the rest of the dry ingredients and milk. Make sure everything is fully mixed.
6. Pour half of the cake into each pan.
7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
8. Cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then remove the cakes and cool completely on a wire rack.
9. To make the strawberry puree: Blend the strawberries and the sugar together until liquefied. Set aside.
10. To make the frosting: Beat 1 cup unsalted butter in a mixer until light and fluffy. Slowly add the powdered sugar, 1/2 cup at a time, mixing fully each time. Add the salt and vanilla and mix for 2 minutes or until everything is light, fluffy, and texture of a thick buttercream frosting.
11. Place the frosting into a piping bag with a flat pastry tip on the bottom (since my cake was going to be covered, I just smoothed mine out with a knife).
12. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and cover with a layer of strawberry puree. Pipe a layer of frosting on top.
13. Place the second cake on top of the first frosted cake.
14. Frost the top half of the cake lightly with a crumb coat, a thin layer of frosting to serve as a primer, stopping once you get to the filling in between the layers.
15. Top the cake with the sheet of fondant, slowly smoothing it down, ensuring it covers the filling in between the cake layers.
16. Using a pair of kitchen scissors or a knife, cut the edges of the fondant to replicate the edges of the Minecraft cake (I completely omitted this step as I was ready to be done with the cake. I recommend using a fondant smoother to get the smooth look as well). :)
17. Top with 10 strawberries in various sizes, cut into thin squares, to replicate the cake (in my opinion, you don't need 10. I used few as I divided the cake after recording to send to family members. Even so, 10 is a lot).
Regrettably, I love this concept, but have had better cakes than this flavor wise and fondant, unless used minimally as decoration, always ruins cakes for me. I would recommend making more of the buttercream frosting, cover entire cake, and use a cake smoother to give it the block look (if you don't like fondant, if so, disregard).
