This tutorial, we'll specifically cover the basics and framework that will be used and referenced often in the upcoming tutorials, so it is suggested to go through this tutorial first before hitting the annotations above and heading to the next tutorial.

What does this tutorial cover? We'll show you how to set up a custom install directory which will simplify things for you when you begin modding. You will no longer have to go through your user profiles and through hidden folders in order to start dropping files in. This will make things much easier and quicker for you, in the future.
We'll also be showing you how to utilize the custom launcher (and how to edit it). If you wish to edit it, use Notepad++. This is a much better program than Notepad and can help you in the future. You'll want this program, especially if you wish to get into minecraft modding, or even bukkit plugins.
I'll also quickly go over how to edit your profiles, and explain their overall function. This will allow you to have multiple directories which enforces the idea that you can have completely separate gameplay experiences; for example, you can have a heavily modified singleplayer and a non-modified (or vanilla) multiplayer profile in separate directories that will not conflict.
As an extra bonus, I also fit in how to increase the amount of ram you utilize in your minecraft profiles. So lets say you want your heavily modified minecraft profile to have a bit more ram in order to provide it with more power and make things go more smoothly for you. Keep in mind, you should always leave a bit of memory/ram (at least 1gb) for your operating system, or else you will start to slow down your computer quite a bit.
