Normally I dislike the thoughts of first person view games, but Mirror's Edge's style of gameplay is so fresh and interesting to me that I was simply drawn to it. Running away from enemies instead of shooting them all dead in an first person game? Crazy talk! But here it is! While I can see why this isn't a mainstream title I feel it deserves some love for its art choice alone. Big beautiful bright colours that make the environment as much a part of the game as the characters (if not blind you a little bit) Simple places like dirty old rooftops or office buildings have a sense of life and make Mirror's Edge a wonder to behold. When Mirror's Edge 2 is finally released I hope the soul of this game is carried over.. or at least kept in tact. The last thing I would want is for this very unique title to be turned into shovelware.
Also, as gamer and a Let's Player I am very excited to be adding another female lead to my let's play channel as there isn't nearly enough Jill Valentine's and Yuna's out here. Though whether or not Faith Connors is on their level remains to be seen I am still pleased that I have the opportunity to see how well her character is written.
Here's a bit more about the game:
In Mirror's Edge, the player controls the protagonist, Faith Connors, from a first-person perspective as she is challenged to navigate across a gleaming city, by jumping between rooftops, running across walls, and gaining access to buildings through ventilation shafts. This is accomplished by use of techniques and movements inspired by the discipline of parkour. Faith Connors, known to most simply as Faith, is a Runner and the sister of Kate Connors. An independent young woman, Faith detests the domineering, totalitarian regime that controls the City and the lives of its inhabitants. Faith's attitude towards the government is rooted in the events of her past, and causes her to rebel against it by becoming a Runner. Faith often seems to find herself involved in conspiracies surrounding the government due to her family connections or her circumstance as a Runner.
Mirror's Edge takes place in an unnamed 'Utopian' city where life is comfortable and crime almost non-existent. But the city's state of bliss is the achievement of a domineering and totalitarian regime which monitors all communication, controls the media, has policies which include the outright prohibition of smoking and alcohol. The City also operates sham trials, and runs on a sham democracy. Eighteen years before the events of the game they had opened fire on a protest against their rule, killing many civilians.
As the story begins the mayoral elections are near and a new candidate, Robert Pope, is challenging the incumbent Mayor Callaghan on a platform of deregulation.
Along with the campaign mode, Mirror's Edge features a time attack mode, where the player must try to complete one of a set of special maps in the shortest amount of time. Best times can be uploaded to online leaderboards, where players can also download ghosts of other players to compete against. The maps are unlocked by playing through the campaign mode.
