♫MISSION 1, Lethal Weapon (Amiga) SNES Arrangement - NintendoComplete
81This is an arrangement of Barry Leitch's first stage theme from Ocean's 1992 Amiga game, Lethal Weapon. I have arranged it for native playback on SNES hardware, and the audio was recorded directly from a launch model US SNES console.
The Lethal Weapon games for the SNES and the Amiga were virtually identical to one another in most ways, so unless you've played both of them, you might not have noticed just how different their soundtracks are.
The SNES game's soundtrack is great, like most Ocean's soundtracks tend to be. But this first mission theme - why did they not keep it for the SNES version? It's so awesome!
This arrangement wasn't quite as easy as you might think, despite the similarities between the two platforms in how they generate music. I spent quite a bit of time working out those crazy long pitchbending notes (tedious math...) and finding replacement samples that came close to matching the original's. I expanded the number of channels used to provide a more discrete stereo separation than the Amiga tune used. Hard-panned drums to the right and guitar to the left is really uncomfortable to listen to with headphones on! I also reworked a fair number of the original song's baked-in reverb effects to take proper advantage of the SNES's hardware reverb.
Overall, the song is fantastic. It blends a couple of very different styles to create something with a design that feels neither 8 nor 16-bit, but rather, some sort of brilliantly realized chimera. It makes me think of a Commodore 64 song, but done with samples. Barry Leitch is the man! You already know what I'm talking about if you've played Top Gear, though.
