Mission 6: An Oscar Winning Performance | Hunt a Sub | 688 (I) Hunter/Killer | Retro
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Captain Chang Plays... 688 (I) Hunter/Killer
In the previous episode, we destroyed a ship in the harbor of Havana, but was hounded by ASW helos.
Single Mission 6: An Oscar Winning Performance
MISSION: Flash traffic // Escort USS Nimitz-class carrier.
We are in very shallow waters... 250 ft. We went to 60 ft to get an update, then went back down to 100 ft.
Intel says a Rebel Oscar sub is sailing south, intending to attack the Nimitz. Stay north of the Nimitz. If Oscar prepares to launch or approach within 25 nm of Nimitz, shoot it.
We are surrounded by both biological contacts and neutral ships, we didn't bother categorizing them all. We know the two biologicals are shrimp colonies: they clack and hiss.
We were heading west, and we decided to head north, then northeast.
Eventually we noticed a contact to the north-northeast, submerged, and classification immediately flagged it as a hostile. It could only be our target, the Oscar.
We launched two torpedoes after it, but one simply sank (no idea why).
Then sonar also noticed what appears to be something coming toward us. It must be a torpedo... so we evaded to the east, accelerating to 15 kt. In the meanwhile, our torpedo hit home.
We popped a decoy when that torpedo seems to be seeking us, but we avoided that. We got a couple pings from the Arleigh Burke to the south, but that's friendly. We ascended to 60 ft to transmit mission report and end.
Received 800 pt rating, due to being detected by the Oscar. However, checking the log shows that we were detected 1 second into the mission. That means there was nothing we could have done to avoid that. It's a system glitch.
We're ready for the next single mission...
