Single Mission 4: Rebel Yell
MISSION: Flash traffic // Russian rebels have seized a Delta IV SSBN, along with an Akula and Victor II SSN, and went into hiding in the Sea of Okhotsk. Localize all of them, then, if the order comes, sink all of them.
We were cruising at 5 kt, heading west, 350 ft, when it's time to get an update. We started streaming towed array, and went to 60 ft, when sonar called out contact to the north, about 10 nm.
We got our radio update and dove for 560 ft. We have full authorization to sink all three rebel subs. They probably operate in a box to the north of us.
We IDed the sub to the north as a Victor II, as we expected. We changed course to 045 to go around him, and he seems to be just going east then west. Then he turned around at less than 10000 yards, giving us a free up-the-baffle shot. We took it, and it was sunk.
We continued northward, and we detected a contact to our rear, bearing 180, and a contact in front, bearing 350.
It seems someone forgot to turn on the speakers, as that contact to south is clearly biologic (i.e. a whale)
We can't get a clear enough signal to classify the northern contact. We kept going closer, then turned due north to get even closer.
Then the contact separated into two distinct contacts, but still no distance.
We kept waiting, and finally we got separation so that we can tell the closer one is the Akula, and the further one is the Delta IV by inference.
We turned 330 to get closer, and when the time's right, we fired one torpedo at the Akula, heading away. It never heard the incoming torpedo, as it went up his baffles. It sunk.
We turned 300 to get closer to the Delta, and its weak signature made distance estimates difficult. We fired two torpedos when we judged the distance had fallen to 20K yards, but both torpedoes were decoyed away. We fired the other two torpedoes loaded, and this time, BOTH torpedoes hit, sinking the sub.
We went to periscope depth to transmit the mission report. Received full 1000 pt rating.
We're ready for the next single mission...
