This game is a marvel. A true piece of work. Suikoden has a knack for making itself feel like Fire Emblem: The JRPG Featuring Feels every now and then, but this was the first time where it felt like that almost all the way through - and I freaking love it.

Having recently come off of playing Fire Emblem Fates, despite being a good game, I ended up feeling more than a little gipped at the lack of a satisfying setting and storyline for there was barely any to speak of even though it was advertised to be the opposite. Birthright was the least offensive entry in Fates and it was the game I ended up likening this game to it the most for its very similar setup and themes. And all I can say is that Suikoden V is, without a doubt, Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright done [right]. Done SO right!

The setting was the same, but the setup and cast were instantly charming, the story was rock solid and a delight to witness, and the call forwards(and call backs!) to the series history were all tasteful and done well. The player cast is extremely likable, with only few exceptions(something shared with Birthright) and the villainous factions were sly and dastardly and not [outwardly] hammy, save for Marscal, and even he reigns it in. Special shoutouts to both Frey and Lyon. Frey, for being a very well done silent protagonist - for being voiceless he was [incredibly] expressive and the choices the player picks for him all have weight or humor behind them. And Lyon who, while she never did much past being the bodyguard to Frey, still ended up being a fairly likeable person herself with her sass and own backstory, ending up being a more enjoyable version of Katarina from Fire Emblem: Heroes of Light and Shadow. The last time Suikoden had this dynamic that I recall(the first one), it ended up falling flat on its face because Gremio was so boring.

The gameplay is... easy with the PS2 loading times not helping, but hardly a sticking point and only near the endgame did I start to feel like I may be a bit too strong for the more climactic fights. Even so, the game's story kept me hooked all the way through, with only a couple of down times.

For being a tailend PS2 release it's a damn good game and a shame that the series has to end after such a satisfying high. But goddamn I love this game. It's one of the best JRPGs I've ever played. And I'd do it all again.

Much love, Ron, for getting me this game. Thanks to all who attended these streams and watched this playthrough! I hope you enjoyed!
