This new strat shouldn't cost time to go for, because you can try for the normal heart grab in that same last jump I think.

Shoutouts to Luiz Miguel for first seeing this and to domalix for figuring out how it works. This probably doesn't even save time but it's the only way I could do it "consistently".

So basically you need to collect an item that the boomerang is carrying and then scroll a new item on screen before you collect the boomerang. If you have a movie file of this and play it back with frame advance, you'll see the heart tank get loaded onto the boomerang for a frame or two before you collect it. The spacing/timing is really precise though. In theory you can collect this heart tank off of a random drop from the 2nd last pickaxe thrower, but I wanted to find a setup with the sub-tank.

This is very definitely sub-optimal, but this is the best I've found this afternoon. I drop the sub-tank on the last pickaxe thrower on the 2nd last platform, and then regrab it. I throw one air boomerang to kill the pickaxe thrower and grab any powerup he is, and the second boomerang is to collect the sub-tank. If you throw them at ground level, the spacing of the sub-tank will change depending on if the enemy drops a powerup (since the first boomerang will grab that). I didn't want that variability.

After the regrab, I move such that both boomerangs will hit the first pickaxe enemy and kill him without dropping the tank. I walk to a certain position, kill the thrower in front of me, and dash. If you do it right, you'll collect the heart tank. I was able to collect the heart tank several times with this setup, but I wouldn't be confident enough to use it in runs if I ran this. Perhaps others can find a better setup or just get better at this one.
