Hi! Hope you enjoyed the little showcase! I finished this project surprisingly quick! So I made this video to feature the main component which is the 3x5 tile-able displays where each lamp can be controlled individually.
The typewriter itself was implemented in the simplest way possible. You click a button and the corresponding letter shows up on the display. Every time you type something the cursor moves forward automatically. You can also move the cursor manually without altering a cell and erase/reset all the array with a single click.
Since the focus is not the typewriter itself I didn't bother making the cursor move in both directions (no backspace) or even reset the cursor when the player clears the screen. I did add the ability to overwrite cells though.
The main components of this infinitely expandable system are:
1. The configurable 3x5 displays that can (currently) display: 0123456789ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ+-/'!.?:(SPACE)
2. The input panel which works as a pulse length encoder and communicates to the main unit with a single wire!
3. The white circuit on top of the displays that decodes the pulse lengths selecting the character to be displayed.
4. The shift register that keeps all the cells locked except the current one and it updates every time the system gets an input.
The system is brutally compact but very slow and was sped up in the video to make it more interesting to watch. You can download the map if you're interested but don't forget to leave me some feedback (you can type once the cursor moves)!
