Momotarou Densetsu II - Part 2/8 - PC Engine (Turbografx-16) - 桃太郎伝説II ~ New Party Member!
4Released just five months after its prequel remake, Momotarou Densetsu II shares a lot with its predecessor. Same funky humor, same graphics, same battle system, same style all-around. It also starts the same way, story-wise and combat-wise, because the early game is a grind fest.
However, things change pretty quickly. Your three original animal friends all join you again within a few hours, and then you'll start to get actual party members! That's right, by the time you reach the end of the game, you'll have four controllable party members in battle, akin to other JRPGs of the time. This reduces the grind by quite a bit, so the game flows much more smoothly.
But wait! The developers and their crazy humor wanted to make this the game with the most party members you've ever seen in a JRPG. And... they succeeded. Although you cannot control temporary party members, eventually you'll have a long line of something like 17 party members just following Momotarou on the screen. Ten statues (!), a giant (!) and some other random guy, in addition to your regular party members and animal friends! And they all share the same bed at the local inn! Can you imagine? XD There's also a difficult way to get the poop emojis from the first village to join you as party members! I never got them, because they'll only join you if you've never used the teleport spell. By that point in the game, it was already too late for me, and it would have been quite tedious to achieve. Moreover, even if you did get them, they don't even do anything -- they're just there for show.
Of course, the hermits and their wild challenges are still here, too. Once again, there are some very good music tracks in this game, a standout one for me being the regular boss battle music. However, I think the soundtrack was overall better in the first game. Otherwise, it was disappointing to find out that besides the first area of the game, the world map is exactly the same as it was in the first game, with a few differences. Since this game takes place three years after the first, it makes sense, but it would have been nice to discover new lands.
All in all, if I didn't recommend the first game due to its ridiculous never-ending grinding festival, I can wholeheartedly recommend this one if you know some Japanese. It's fun, it's funny, it's a good old classic JRPG. I can't wait to try the next and final Momotarou game on the PC Engine, Momotarou Densetsu Gaiden! Long live peaches!
