In the wake of Makai Mura's success, a spin-off series was created where you play as a Red Arremer, the annoying little red demon from the main series. Your goal? Save the underworld from other bigger, badder demons! Er... right. Interestingly, the game uses an overworld map in RPG fashion, but the random encounters give place to side scrolling action stages, reminiscent of Zelda II. As you progress, you'll gain more health, more wing (flight) power and stronger projectiles. My favorite tune in this game is, by far, Hell Field, but otherwise the soundtrack is nothing to write home about. Otherwise, short game, challenging enough, and a good time if you're a fan of the series! Side note, the word Gaiden in the Japanese title, Makai Mura Gaiden, means something like "side story", very commonly used in Japanese games when stories sharing the same lore and universe that are not part of the main series are told.
