Q: What does it mean to graze Europe?
A: It means that the moon wasn't hitting it head-on but instead at an angle where it slid across the surface of the Earth before losing enough momentum and fully crashing into the Earth.
Q: Why was this impact so devastating?
A: The moon had an initial launch velocity of 100 km/s which is much faster than it would've been if it was only being accelerated by Earth's gravity. This means the impact had much more energy.
Q: Will European Union countries go into recession because of this?
A: Yes, along with every other country.
Q: Why didn't we nuke the moon before it got this close?
A: I'm pretty sure there are treaties against detonating nukes in space, and that probably applies here.
