Mortal Kombat (Master System) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Arena's 1993 fighting game for the Sega Master System, Mortal Kombat.
Played through as Sub-Zero on the medium difficulty level. I also punched in the blood code during the intro.
Though it looked a bit meager next to the Genesis and SNES games, if you (1) lived in a PAL territory, and (2) were determined to play Mortal Kombat on an 8-bit console, then good ol' Acclaim was determined to sell you... something.
The Master System version of Mortal Kombat feels a great deal like the Game Gear game (https://youtu.be/3nyZZxoVm6k ), but with smaller characters thanks to the higher resolution display. You get six of the seven original fighters to select from (Kano is MIA), and only two stages (the pit and Goro's lair) survived the axe, but Mortal Kombat manages to put up a reasonable facade. The controls are more responsive than you might expect given the limited animation, and some special moves are available through simplified commands, though they can be exceedingly difficult to use if you don't have their timings down cold.
While this made for an impressive handheld game in the early nineties, it really wasn't good enough to be sold as a fully-fledged console release. It was better than the Master System's version of Street Fighter II (https://youtu.be/qu7VMOchTW4 ), but the game play is too compromised for it to be worthwhile, especially in this day and age.
Still, it's a neat novelty, don't you think?
