I remember back in the days when playing Mortal 1 where the players banded together in guilds/factions and split the land among them while leaving a zone as the wild lands where no rules or laws were present... the "forced" traded among players in order to advance and GM´s and devs programming in AI and NPC that will put up threats to the player base by building and expanding their own territory.

The same concept but just better looking/working is Mortal II.
