Book II: The Lucky Knot
Chapter 1
"They say you're going after the spider?"
The wizard scuttled past the table and hunkered down across from him, hands folded atop an angular staff, boring in Danka with his sunken, beady eyes.
Chapter 2
"And what about luck?"
The wizard drew from his pocket a thin length of hairy cord, and tied three slip knots into it.
"If you need good luck, wish for it, and untie a knot. If you use one knot, I get a third of your bounty. Two knots, two thirds. Three knots, and you lose it all."
"What if it doesn't work?"
"Even if one know doesn't work, you don't pay. But if you lie to me, you'll spend the rest of your life with no luck at all!"
Chapter 3
Danka didn't put too much hope in that idea. At any rate, he had no plans to back down.
He spat over the edge of the cart in disgust and pulled on the reins. No, not to turn back towards town to seek his fortune, but to take a manly piss against a hawthorne tree.
Danka's sense of relief did not last long. Only till it got through him that despite the seemingly bushiness of the plant, something he produced had nevertheless dripped through to the bear sitting beneath it.
Chapter 4
The bear was an intelligent animal, and instead of charging straight through the prickly branches, it ambled around to one side, giving Danka a slight head start.
Kapustka, naturally enough, decided not to wait for them. She was a hauler, not a racer, so Danka caught up with her after five hundred yards. He hopped into the cart and almost out of his pants. The bear panted along diligently behind them, growling a threat to take revenge on Danka for the soiling.
Chapter 5
What terrible luck! Barely halfway there and things had already taken a turn for the worse. Luck... Luck!!
On its way out of the valley, the path split in two. The broader fork led straight to the Spider's part of the forest, while the other, narrower trail trickled off along a low rise into the burdock.
Kapustka snorted, shied off to one side, and tore down the slope. The cart bounced over a rock as if it had decided to flee straight from the heavens... and stopped.
Silence. No trampling, no roaring, no crunching of dried grass bent under beastly paws. Could it be that his luck had held out? Fine, he could have his one-third share. For a triumph like this, Danka wouldn't miss it.
