Book II: The Lucky Knot
Chapter 10
Something flashed in the grass. His eyes still glued to the lair, Danka reached for it, and came up with a fistful of grass and a gold chain with a teardrop pendant. There was another chain, just over there, threaded through a ring. A satchel must have ripped open here, while somebody was getting nabbed by the Spider, and its valuable contents had been scattered in a path that led all the way to the web.
Chapter 11
He had just decided to poke through one more pile he had seen and then crawl back when he felt something touch his shoulder.
The prisoner made a heroic effort to concentrate his gaze on him, and moved his lower jaw, but no sound emerged from his open mouth.
Chapter 12
Danka nervously felt in his pocket for the potion in its flash. If, gods forbid, the Spider got to him, his only hope would be to somehow drink the elixir while he could still move his arms, and within 48 hours, before the venom crept its way to his heart.
This poor sap could barely move his head...
Chapter 13
Danka hesitated.
"Sorry, man... it's too late to get you out of there," he reasoned, half to himself. "Without the web to slow down death for you, you wouldn't last a day. There's only one thing I can do for you now. Let me just get up my courage... I've never had to do this to a... person..."
