Chapter 10
Melrick was still kneeling, eyes closed and arms outstretched, waiting for a result.
The maiden looked more closely, professionally assessing the value of his sword and his well-bred steed, as well as the family seal on his saddlecloth.
"Oh noble stranger! You have saved me from that son of a... from a terrible fate. How can I ever thank you?"
Melrick opened one eye hopefully, then the other, and started to smile. He showered the lady with compliments and seated her in his saddle, and then, almost bursting with pride, steered his horse towards the city.
Chapter 11
The astrologer remembered about Melrick only late that evening.
"What's this?" he hailed his assistant in confusion. "Didn't that what's-his-name, that swarthy-looking one... Sir Melrick! Didn't he stop by?"
"He was here," smirked the assistant. "I summed it up for him."
"How exactly did you do that, you fool?" Asked the astrologer. "You can't read!"
"What's reading got to do with it?" asked the assistant with a shrug. "Haven't I been listening to you all these five years? I gave him a little something about the positions of this and that, about the Scribe and the heavenly houses..."
Chapter 12
"Do you understand what you've done you idiot? The stars say that Melrick shouldn't even leave the house today! And he wanted to go after a dragon, you hear? A dragon! One who's maimed more sorry fools than you have fingers! You've lost me my best client, you big lout! Oh you...."
Chapter 13
The stars winked mischievously in the heavens.
