Book II: The Lucky Knot
Chapter 6
After scratching his blond head and turning it this way and that, he took courage, throughly cussed out the horse, who was plastered with burrs, and led her by the bridle further down the trail. The cart wobbled whimsically on its back wheels, stuttering and screeching over every rut.
Soon it became clear th4e Danka was not going to reach the Spider's lair before noon. Maybe he should wish to avoid having to battle the Spider altogether? But no, he scolded himself. That's a childish daydream, not luck. It would be a waste of a good kno-o-o-o....
Chapter 7
Danka fell for a long time, a two-story drop. His back cracked so loudly upon landing he couldn't even yell. At first. Then he noticed a thicket of spikes, driven into the bottom of the pit all around him, on one of which a wolf's corpse was rotting - and he hollered his guts out.
Danka was lying on a pile of leaves, his arms and legs sprawling just so - even if he had tried, he wouldn't have been able to arrange himself so perfectly between the spikes without coming away with some extra holes.
Chapter 8
He realized something was clutched in his fist, and opened his hand to take a look.... and everything swam before his eyes again. There was one knot left in the cord. Danka had never noticed pulling on the end of it while he was falling into the wolf pit. And what if he hadn't?! What a thought!
Maybe he should go back before it was too late? Although... one third of a hundred... or two hundred... or three hundred gold pieces... gods above!
There was still reason enough to take the risk.
Chapter 9
As a matter of fact there was no forbidding barricade, no dead thicket over blackened earth, no moss or toadstools up to his knees. It was just a meadow, grassy and sunlit, where oak trees grew, spreading their branches wide... with a cobweb stretched between them. A web so enormous that the branches of the centuries-old trees it draped from looked like fragile wisps of heather.
Danka froze, unable to takes his eyes off the thick bundles of string planted throughout the web.
