Mother Nature can be merciless. From the roiling hurricanes of the Gulf Coast to the trailer-tossing storms of Tornado Alley, to the ground-pounding quakes of California, violent natural disasters have riddled the world since the beginning of the time, but the death counts of the most ancient of these disasters are lost to history. The Mediterranean island of Stroggli, for example is believed to have been completely wiped out by a volcanic eruption and ensuing tsunami that wiped out the entire Minoan civilization around 1500 B.C. How many lives were lost? We'll never know. For other disasters, historians can at least make estimates. The following 8 disasters are the deadliest for which reasonably accurate death tolls exist. Here are eight of the worst natural disasters of all time.
