A shortie, yet ironically the most important game of the series, even though it never obviously was sold to the public. This is a tech demo made by John Carmack and Tom Hall in September 1990 that showed off that you COULD do scrolling platformer gameplay on the PC, albeit with EGA graphics. This game led to the creation of iD Software and the engine was the basis of Commander Keen 1-3. This could have also been Super Mario Bros 3 on the PC but Nintendo said no. Oh well!
