Multimedia was defining late 90's/early 2000's computing, for better or for worse. For those with low-end machines, the arrival of MP3, DVD and DivX codecs didn't do anyone any favors. However, in a changing world, Linux needed to stay relevant. Luckily, it was catching up fast. Now granted, because of licensing and legality issues, Linux couldn't ship with a DVD, MP3, or Divx codec. However, it could play the Amiga tracker formats. The support for various image formats was included with various programs, along with Postscript and PDF support as well via KGhostview and xPDF, so that no user was left out.

VMware Player 17 is virtualizing a workstation with a single core allocated to it. The host has a Ryzen 5 5500 6-Core CPU running at 4.2GHz. The VM has 256MB's of RAM allocated to it, a VESA Compatible display adapter, and XFree86 is running at the screen resolution of 1024 by 768, 16-bit color depth. Also installed is a Ensoniq 1371 Audio Adapter, an ATAPI CD-ROM Drive, and a 16GB HD image with RedHat Linux 7.3 installed.
