8Le Retour de la momie (The Mummy Returns) est un film américain écrit et réalisé par Stephen Sommers, sorti en 2001.
Il s'agit de la suite du film La Momie, du même réalisateur, sorti en 1999. Il est suivi par La Momie : La Tombe de l'empereur Dragon sorti en 2008.
Malgré un accueil critique mitigé, le film est un succès au box-office et rapporte plus de 433 millions de dollars.
En 3067 avant Jésus-Christ, Mathayus, le Roi Scorpion (Dwayne « The Rock » Johnson), tente en vain de prendre la Cité de Thèbes avec sa gigantesque armée. Les survivants errent dans le désert et meurent les uns après les autres. Alors que Mathayus sent sa fin proche, il fait un pacte avec le dieu Anubis, qui fonde instantanément l'Oasis d'Ahm Shere pour le sauver. Il reçoit alors le commandement de la terrible armée d'Anubis avec laquelle il terrasse ses ennemis. Sur le point de se rendre Maître de Thèbes, Mathayus se fait voler son âme par Anubis afin de le servir pour l'éternité.
En 1933, voici huit ans que Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) et Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) ont fait la terrible rencontre avec Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), la momie ressuscitée. Ils mènent leur vie dans un Manoir à Londres avec Alex, leur fils âgé de huit ans, lui aussi fasciné par l'Égypte ancienne et qui participe activement aux recherches archéologiques de ses parents.
Ils se rendent en Égypte, où ils trouvent le bracelet du Roi Scorpion, qu'ils rapportent chez eux. Mais Alex veut l'essayer et le bracelet s'accroche à son bras. Une nouvelle tempête se prépare dans les profondeurs du désert Saharien, dans l'Oasis perdue d'Ahm Shere.
Une secte mystérieuse et avide de pouvoir, menée par le Conservateur du British Museum et la séduisante Anck-su-namun réincarnée, ramène à la vie la seule créature capable de vaincre le Roi Scorpion : le Grand Prêtre Imhotep, condamné depuis trois mille ans à errer comme un mort-vivant pour avoir séduit la maîtresse du Pharaon Séthi Ier, dont la momie a été ramenée secrètement au British Museum. Imhotep convoite le bracelet détenu par les O'Connell. Bracelet qui lui permettra de trouver l'Oasis secrète où repose le Roi Scorpion et de libérer l'armée d'Anubis. Le bracelet restant verrouillé au bras d'Alex, Imotep fait kidnapper ce dernier et il commence avec lui une formidable odyssée qui les mènent de Karnak à Ahm Shere en passant par Abou Simbel et Philae. Les parents O'Connell les suivent dans un dirigeable, guidés par un ami de Rick. Imhotep veut tuer le Roi Scorpion, ce qui lui permettrait de prendre le commandement de l'armée d'Anubis.
Ardeth Bay (Oded Fehr), Chef Militaire des Medjaï, implore Rick O'Connell d'intervenir pour empêcher cet acte aux conséquences désastreuses.
In 3067 BC, Mathayus, King Scorpion (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), tried in vain to take the City of Thebes with his gigantic army. The survivors roam the desert and die one after the other. While Mathayus feels his close end, he makes a pact with the god Anubis, who instantly founds Ahm Shere's Oasis to save him. He then received the command of the terrible army of Anubis with which he defeated his enemies. On the point of becoming Master of Thebes, Mathayus is robbed of his soul by Anubis in order to serve him for eternity.
In 1933, eight years ago Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) made the terrible encounter with Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), the resurrected mummy. They lead their lives in a Manor in London with Alex, their eight-year-old son, also fascinated by ancient Egypt and actively involved in his parents' archaeological research.
They go to Egypt, where they find the bracelet of the King Scorpion, which they bring home. But Alex wants to try it and the bracelet clings to his arm. A new storm is brewing in the depths of the Saharan desert, in the lost Oasis of Ahm Shere.
A mysterious and eager sect of power led by the Conservative of the British Museum and the seductive Anck-su-namun reincarnated, brings back to life the only creature capable of defeating the Scorpion King: High Priest Imhotep, condemned for three thousand years at wandering like a living dead for seducing the mistress of Pharaoh Sehmi, whose mummy was secretly brought back to the British Museum. Imhotep covets the bracelet held by the O'Connell. Bracelet that will allow him to find the Secret Oasis where the King Scorpion rests and to liberate the army of Anubis. The bracelet remains locked on Alex's arm, Imotep kidnaps the latter and begins with him a formidable odyssey which leads them from Karnak to Ahm Shere passing by Abu Simbel and Philae. O'Connell's parents follow them in an airship, guided by a friend of Rick. Imhotep wants to kill the Scorpion King, which would allow him to take command of the army of Anubis.
