If you look at this character, she always has two Remora fish friends moving around with her. And the said Remora friends had expressed Muriel’s lack of skill when it comes to leaping. Well, they claim that the manta ray is “not very good at anything.”
And while Muriel may be portrayed as clumsy or untalented in the show, real manta rays are quite the opposite. According to National Geographic, these marine creatures are brilliant. Found in subtropical, tropical, and temperate ocean waters on Earth, manta rays have the largest brain-to-size ratio among cold-blooded fish.
They might be cold-blooded fishes, but manta rays have a mass of blood vessels to keep their brains warm. According to the BBC, it is surprising to know that manta rays, typically buoyant, are fast divers! Their dives can reach up to 13mph, meaning that they are faster than sharks and whales. Now, that is unexpected.
If you’re wondering what the connection is between diving deep to keeping the manta rays’ brains warm, here is the answer. The heat produced in their muscles upon diving was believed to be stored in their vessels and used to keep their brain functioning despite the icy dive! It’s like a superpower.
Moreover, it is believed that these creatures can recognize themselves in the mirror. Studies have also indicated that manta rays may be capable of creating maps of their environment. That’s not all; these brilliant animals have been described as playful and curious. Ecologist Josh Stewart stated that “Mantas will go out of their way to come interact. They’re much more like a mammal.”
Moving on, Muriel eventually found something she is genuinely good at acting like a snail in the water! So her Remora friends’ claim of her not being good at anything is not entirely true. But compared to real-life manta rays, the real animals are undoubtedly more talented and skilled.
