The History of the Hot Air Balloon
Brothers Montgolfier
The brothers Joseph and Etiénne Montgolfier are the inventors of the balloon, the first aircraft in history capable of carrying passengers. The two brothers are the sons of a wealthy paper manufacturer from Annonay, a town in the south of France. Joseph-Michel was born on August 26, 1740, Jack-Etienne on January 6, five years later. Joseph is curious and creative, but has little business acumen. In 1772 the father then entrusted the leadership of the family business to the younger Etiénne. It is he who introduces some innovations into the factory, such as the production of tissue paper. For the successes they have achieved in the paper sector, the King of France, Louis XVI, finances the experiments of the two brothers, who will subsequently also receive the license of nobility.
After developing a model of parachute, Joseph devotes himself to the study of flight. One day, while observing the fireplaces, he notices some pieces of paper that are spinning and he has an intuition: the heat brings objects upwards. He then involves his brother in a series of experiments and with him creates a hot air balloon made of fabric and covered with paper. In 1783 the first balloon of the Montgolfier brothers flies over Annonay, about 1000 meters high. A little over two months later, however, French chemist Jaques Charles flies a balloon filled with hydrogen. The Montgolfiers and Charles contend for the authorship of the invention, and the challenge begins as to who will be the first to fly passengers.
The Montgolfiers collaborate with Jean Baptiste Réveillon, a well-known paper maker, to make a new balloon, which is colored to distinguish it from Charles's. The Aerostat Révellion flies on September 19, 1783 at an altitude of 500 meters, in front of the King and the crowd gathered at Versailles. On board are a sheep, a goose and a rooster. The news goes around the world. On November 21, 1783, the first two aeronauts in history, Pilâtre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes fly in a balloon decorated with garlands, 27 meters high and 17 meters wide. They remain in the air for 25 minutes, 100 meters high. But the French government decides to focus on the use of gas. On January 7, 1785, Charles's hydrogen balloon crossed the English Channel. After the French Revolution, the two brothers no longer have the means to continue their experiments. Napoleon Bonaparte appoints Joseph administrator of the Conservatory of Arts and Crafts and confers on him the Legion of Honor. Etienne Montgolfier died on 2 August 1799 in Serrières, Joseph, on 26 June 1810 in Balaruc-les-Bains. Hot air balloons fly back in the 1960s. Balloons, made of nylon and propane gas, are stronger and less flammable than their paper ancestors.
