RELAX MUSIC presents the HISTORY of the TURNTABLE

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE TURNTABLE

It seemed like a finished story, but in recent times vinyl records are coming back into fashion which, in the height of streaming, have surpassed CDs in sales.

An ancestor of the turntable was the phonograph which at first consisted of a cylinder on which grooves were engraved. It was designed by Thomas Edison in 1877. Then the grooves were recorded on a disc. This device was born almost by chance, because the inventor of the telegraph had the idea of using the same principle to record the human voice and reproduce it.

On December 6, 1877, Edison gave the first practical demonstration of his phonograph to his collaborators. It was a German who replaced the cylinder with a disc for the first time. From the phonograph, passing through the graphophone, to the gramophone the step is short. The discs took the place of the cylinders forcefully.

Originally discs were recorded on one side only and from 1908 they began to be recorded on both sides. At first it was used to create the records, which were "read" by a needle supported by an arm, shellac was used which was then supplanted, from 1948, by the so-called vinyl. With this material it was possible to reduce the rotation speed and from 78 rpm, it reached 45 and 33 rpm.

The device that was needed was called a turntable and in 1924 it became electric.
