The Founding fathers believed in natural law. That a person, when their life, property and or liberty is challenged by another person or entity can lash out in it defense.

"if I have no room to escape, or if I run and am pursued to the wall or into a corner, where I cannot elude his fury, and have no other way to preserve my own Life from his violence but by taking his, there, I have an indisputable right to do it, and should be justified in warding thro' the blood of an whole army, if I had power to shed it and had no other way to make my escape." - John Adams

They also believed that bill of rights was an acknowledgment of rights. Not a document which gives or protects rights. As such, it acknowledges that humans has an inalienable right to keep and bear arms and that that right should not be infringed.

Note: It's impossible to infringe upon this right completely as once laws become too onerous, the people will disobey them.
