I know its not advanced, this is for people that may not own the game, but are interested in it...

tips for a monster spawner:
find a cage with a pig in it near green mossy stone.
surround the cage with torches
block on the entire room
dig 1 block down all around the room
make a bucket, create an infinite water pool
add water to 2 corners of the room
add a hallway that cascaded downward (one block down every 5 blocks or so)
you need to lead a hallway down at least 30 blocks away from the spawner
add 2 more buckets of water in the kill room
block of the room and kill away!

i would dig a hole straight up from the killing room of the spawn area, this will provide easier access.
