My Complicated Relationship with Canada Day as a Sikh Canadian
Happy belated Canada Day! ๐จ๐ฆ This year feels... different. There's this huge wave of patriotism, partly a reaction to everything happening south of the border, but it's making me think about where we, as Sikh Canadians, fit into the picture.
For generations, Sikhs have been a proud part of the Canadian fabric. Our parents and grandparents came here fleeing persecution in India, and Canada became a true home. We've served in the military and are deeply involved in the political landscape.
But lately, with shifting politics and friendships between world leaders like Carney (Trudeau) and Modi, things feel complicated. It's left a lot of us feeling a bit on the outside, questioning if we're truly seen as Canadians or just permanent guests. Itโs a strange feeling, especially when your roots here feel deeper than anywhere else.
Despite the complicated feelings, I wouldn't trade living here for anything. The beauty of this country is undeniable. Let's talk about it โ what's your relationship with your national identity?
